The Microchip CoaXPress series is a range of high-speed coaxial video transmission chipsets designed for industrial machine vision, medical endoscopes, automated inspection, humanoid robot vision and high-definition imaging for drones. It comprises three main product categories: standalone video equalisers, coaxial transmitters and integrated transceivers, and supports the CoaXPress 1.1 / 2.0 protocols. It transmits high-speed image data, downlink control commands and power over coax (PoC) simultaneously via a single coaxial cable, providing a high-bandwidth, low-latency, highly interference-resistant video link solution for long-distance applications.

I. Video Equaliser
Representative models: EQCO31R20 and EQCO62R20. These are adaptive cable equalisers for the receiving end, specifically designed to compensate for high-frequency attenuation and intersymbol interference in coaxial cables. They are commonly used at the camera receiving end, in relay nodes, and at the front end of image capture cards.
Key Features
1. Adaptive continuous-time equalisation automatically compensates for signal loss caused by coaxial cables of varying lengths and specifications, eliminating the need for complex register adjustments and enabling lossless restoration of high-speed video eye diagrams over long distances; the EQCO31R20 supports a maximum data rate of 3.125 Gbps, whilst the EQCO62R20 supports a maximum data rate of 6.25 Gbps.
2. Built-in CDR (Clock and Data Recovery) unit that reconstructs the synchronisation clock from the received data stream, eliminating cable jitter and ensuring stable high-definition images without screen distortion or frame loss.
3. Integrated signal detection, link status indication and polarity reversal functions, facilitating system link diagnostics and fault reporting.
4. With a wide operating temperature range of –40°C to +85°C, a compact QFN package and low power consumption, it is suitable for integration into the confined modules of endoscopes, industrial cameras and the vision cameras of humanoid robots.
5. Compatible with 8b/10b encoding and natively compatible with the CoaXPress protocol; can be used independently with an external transmit driver or integrated into a mixed network with transmitters and transceivers from the same series.
Application: Signal restoration at the receiving end; suitable for scenarios involving long cables, multiple adapters and high EMI interference, serving as a link repeater or signal conditioning device on the camera’s receiving side.
II. Video Transmitters (Transmitter)
Representative models: EQCO31T20, EQCO62T20, EQCO125T40. These are coaxial transmitter driver chips installed on the image output side of a camera, converting parallel high-speed video data from an FPGA or image sensor into coaxial differential signals for transmission via cable.
Key Features
1. Built-in programmable pre-emphasis and output swing adjustment provide pre-compensation for high-frequency roll-off in coaxial transmission, enhancing transmission margin over long distances. The EQCO125T40 supports up to 12.5 Gbps, meeting the bandwidth requirements of 8K and high-speed line-scan cameras.
2. An integrated coaxial power delivery path supports PoC (Power over Coax), enabling a single cable to simultaneously transmit both video and power. This eliminates the need for additional power cables, simplifies the camera harness, and is particularly well-suited for robotic mobile vision and medical endoscopes.
3. Supports an asynchronous, low-speed upstream control channel for the capture card to send trigger signals and camera register configuration commands, whilst the downstream channel transmits high-speed images. This asymmetric bidirectional transmission complies with the CoaXPress architecture.
4. Supports hot-swap protection and output impedance matching to reduce EMI radiation, and has passed rigorous industrial-grade electrostatic discharge (ESD) testing.
5. Can be directly interfaced with the PolarFire FPGA high-speed SerDes interface; when used with the official IP core, it enables rapid setup of the camera transmission link.
Application: Signal transmission at the camera end and drive output at the image source; suitable for high-speed area-scan cameras, line-scan inspection cameras and in-vehicle high-definition imaging modules.
III. Integrated Transceivers
Representative models: EQCO62X20, EQCO125X40. These single-chip solutions integrate an equaliser, CDR (Cycle Data Regenerator) and cable driver, providing bidirectional transmission and reception capabilities within a single device. They are compatible for use on both the camera side and the acquisition card side, and can also function as link relay chips; they represent the primary solution for CoaXPress 2.0.
Key Features
1. Single-chip bidirectional link: high-speed downstream video channel + low-speed upstream control channel. A single chip replaces two separate components (transmitter and equaliser), streamlining the BOM and reducing PCB footprint. The EQCO125X40 operates at up to 12.5 Gbps with a power consumption of approximately 125 mW, offering a significant low-power advantage amongst solutions with the same bandwidth.
2. The receiver side features built-in adaptive equalisation and DFE (Decision Feedback Equalisation), whilst the transmitter side integrates configurable pre-emphasis. This provides strong link adaptability, accommodating distances ranging from short backplanes to coaxial cables spanning tens of metres.
3. Built-in PoC (Power over Coax) management circuitry supports coaxial power transmission of up to 900mA, enabling cameras to draw power directly from the cable without the need for a local power supply.
4. Link monitoring functions: eye diagram monitoring, bit error rate statistics and signal strength detection. The host can read link quality in real time, supporting link health diagnostics for AI vision systems.
5. Backward compatible with legacy CoaXPress 1.1 equipment; new and old cameras and capture cards can interconnect, safeguarding existing equipment during upgrades.
6. Complies with reliability standards for industrial automation, medical applications and robotics, supporting continuous, long-term, uninterrupted operation.
Application positioning: Camera end, image capture card end and cable repeater; a single device can be reused in both directions, making it the preferred solution for project selection. It is widely used in industrial AOI inspection, 3D vision, medical endoscopes and vision perception units for humanoid robots.
IV. Common Technical Features
1. Interface Standard: CoaXPress, single-cable coaxial transmission, offering greater transmission distances and stronger interference resistance compared to LVDS and MIPI, making it suitable for moving mechanisms and workshops with strong electromagnetic interference.
2. Encoding: Native support for 8b/10b, DC-balanced, facilitating clock locking by the CDR.
3. Packaging: A standardised, compact QFN package, suitable for high-density camera module designs.
4. Supporting Ecosystem: Microchip provides PolarFire FPGA CoaXPress IP cores, evaluation boards and reference designs, supporting rapid validation of camera and frame grabber solutions.
V. Target Application Scenarios
Suitable for machine vision AOI inspection, high-definition medical endoscopes, industrial high-speed line-scan cameras, humanoid robot vision perception systems, high-definition imaging on board drones, visual positioning for automated equipment, and high-speed snapshot cameras for security applications.
